Victorian Mourning Hair Wreath Family Album

$250.00
Sold Out

Victorian Mourning Album with Hair Wreaths & Embroidered “Remember Me” blue silk bookmark laid-in, 7.5 inches × 6.25 inches, c. 19th century

In memorium of Permelia Schooley née Howell, wife of Aaaron C. Schooley (b. 24 October 1798-d. 2 November 1874) married on February 24, 1821 in Sussex County, New Jersey. Permelia Schooley’s miniature hair wreath is elaborately braided, unlike the other specimens, which are more simply braided; Rebecca Emmans’ hair wreath is also elaborately braided. Permelia’s wreath is tied at the base with a black silk ribbon, indicating that she had passed. According to records, Permelia died suddenly leaving behind ten children. Aaron Schooley remarried after her death and had seven other children with Katherine Dennis. This is likely the handiwork of Mary C. Schooley due to the elaborate swash under her name.

Wreaths listed are:

● Mary C. Schooley (b. 1832) [tied with pink ribbon]

● Elmira Schooley (listed in the 1901 census as still living) [missing from booklet]

● Catherine Schooely [tied with red ribbon; perhaps cochineal dye?]

● George V. Schooley [tied with red ribbon; perhaps cochineal dye?]

● John Schooley [tied with blue ribbon]

● Martha L Schooley [missing from booklet]

● Elizabeth Schooley [tied with pink ribbon]

● Joseph Schooley [tied with blue ribbon]

● Unidentified hair wreath [tied with blue ribbon]

● Rebecca [Schooley] Emmans (b. 1825 d. 1908) (intricately braided tied with a blue
