Artist biography - Sangram Singh, was a guru that lived in Jaipur, Rajasthan, who created tantric works on paper of remarkable quality from the 1950's through the 1980's, without any expectation of personal recognition. Shortly before his passing, he left his oeuvre to one of his spiritual students whom he thought of as a son.
While tantra paintings of this kind were often by trained artists instructed by an adept, or an adept lacking in technique, Sangram Singh was a tantrika with an intuitive eye for composition and exceptional skill with a brush. The resulting works are masterful; seemingly energetically charged – magnetic and luminous.
About Tantra art from Rajasthan - This piece is a fine example of a work on paper by an initiate of an esoteric sect of Hinduism. The symbolic imagery was informed by 17th century cosmological manuscripts, (with roots tracing back even further to the 5th century CE). Such works have been cited as being created for private use an aids in meditation to achieve a heightened state of consciousness and oneness with the macrocosm.
