Second edition and first Johnson edition. Engraved title page by John Payne and illustrated with woodcuts throughout. [38], 1630, [50] pp lacking preliminary and terminal blanks as usual. Handsomely bound in 19th century quarter tooled calf over brown moire silk with five raised bands and spine tooled and lettered in gilt. Folio. Housed in a custom cloth solander case with red morocco spine label tooled and lettered in gilt. Very Good+ with some rubbing to raised bands and gilt at spine with expert repairs to front and rear joints. Armorial bookplate of William Rees-Mogg (1815-1909) at Cholwell House on front pastedown with french curl marbled endpapers. One leaf with a repaired tear at lower margin and a few small worm holes to margins of contents. A remarkably fresh copy of Gerard's acclaimed English herbal text. "This is the first edition enlarged and edited by Thomas Johnson (1595-1644) who corrected many of Gerard's more gullible errors, and improved the accuracy of the illustrations by using Plantin's woodcuts" (Hunt). John Gerard first published his Herball in 1597 and although it was a success, it was regarded as not entirely accurate
