Untitled, by Anonymous artist from Jaipur, Rajasthan, gouache and watercolor on hand-burnishedpaper, 6 × 7.2 inches, c. 1970's - 1980's

This drawing is remarkably similar to a now famous piece by Hilma af Klint, however it was made before images that painting were unearthed. Most likely Klint who was a theosophist, (a religion that merged esoteric Christianity with elements of Hinduism and Buddhism), saw an earlier version of this design. The symbolic imagery in tantric drawings of this kind have been repeated over many generations and are derived from 17th century illustrated manuscripts in sanskrit.

This piece was carefully selected on aesthetic merit from the estate of a serious collector that lived in Jaipur, Rajasthan who acquired approximately 1500 tantric pieces directly from tantrika families and artists throughout the last quarter of the 20th century.
